This natural wicker fancy chair by Wakefield Rattan Co. has a round pressed cane seat above splayed legs and a filligree filled demi-lune apron. The fabulously high back, using the conceit of a peacock feather, is filled with stick and ball diagonal fretwork and radiating fronds, topped with filligree, edged with triple scalloping, and is held between two knobbed posts with braided shafts. This is a tour-de-force of woven and bent rattan technique.
The originator of the rattan business in this country was Cyrus Wakefield. The Wakefield Rattan Works was the largest manufacturing industry of the region in 1896. Mr. Wakefield first began the manufacture of rattan into skirt reeds and baskets, later followed by the production of cane for chair seating. With the introduction of suitable machinery, the manufacturing of cane became a demand all over the country.
