This rare ebonized cherry side chair in the Egyptian Revival Style is attributed to Pottier and Stymus, New York, c. 1870. Pottier and Stymus was one of New York’s leading cabinetmaking and decorating firms in the nineteenth century.
The pierced back is composed of a large rayed lunette surrounding a bold and finely carved winged sphinx, the corners filled with triple lotus blossoms, all capped by a winged globe with twin uraeus and a crest rail in the form of three-dimensional faces. The front legs are fashioned as Egyptian columns, complete with papyrus capitals.
