George Bellows (1882 - 1925)

Jean, 1923

Lithograph || 9 ¼ x 7 inches

George Bellows

George Bellows was a realist painter, born in Columbus, Ohio in 1882, and a vital part of Robert Henri’s Ashcan School group, whose solid visions of city life generally contrasted to the brighter, sweeter and clear streets of the Impressionists. Bellows was able to complete so many portraits of his daughters because he had them come up to the loft area above the studio and sit while he drew their likeness directly onto the stone. Subtle changes in their hair lengths and facial features can be tracked from one season to the next. Jean, 1923, is a lithograph of his daughter, Jean.
