Otto Bacher (1856 - 1909)

Canale Grande, Venice, 1888

Etching || 14 x 23 ½ inches

Bacher, renowned for his etchings, was born in Cleveland in 1856. He studied art in Cleveland and helped found Cleveland's first art organization, the Art Club. In 1878, Bacher traveled to Munich. There he met and studied with Frank Duveneck, which was to have a profound effect upon his work. Bacher moved to Venice where Duveneck later joined him with an entourage of young American artists, the "Duveneck Boys." Bacher had brought his printing press to Italy, which he shared with J.A.M. Whistler. Whistler's great expertise in etching had an enormous impact on Bacher. Bacher's etchings were executed with tremendous skill and simplicity. His handling of line is quite impressive.

In Canale Grande, Venice, 1888 Bacher’s beautiful sun-lit etching consists of gondolas, buildings, and the reflections of each in the water.
